Why you need an MOT Test

If your vehicle is 3 years or older the law requires it has an annual safety check – the Ministry of Transport (MOT) test.

An MOT test ensures your vehicle meets the minimum safety levels required by law.

During the MOT test, the nominated tester conducts an inspection and a comprehensive series of checks around the vehicle. These include the interior and exterior, under the bonnet and underneath the vehicle.

The nominated tester is a person authorised by the Government body, Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

The result of each check is recorded.

If the vehicle passes, you’ll get a VT20 ‘pass’ certificate. If it fails to meet the required standard, you’ll get a VT30 ‘fail’ document instead.

Items not quite in the ‘fail’ category, but worthy of your attention are called advisories. Keep your eye on these as you’ll need to correct them in the near future.

It is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is examined every 12 months. Without a current MOT certificate, you will be unable to drive your vehicle lawfully or renew your licence.

VOSA have computerised MOT testing. This means police and mobile camera units can now check remotely to see if your vehicle has a current MOT.

Motor Clinic offer an MOT reminder service. We’ll contact you just before your MOT due date to remind you that it’s imminent.

*Free retest is subject to terms and conditions: If you choose Motor Clinic to carry out any necessary repairs highlighted by the MOT Test, we will carry out a free retest.
